History of American Pop Music is as straightforward as the class sounds. We covered the history of American pop music from the early 1800s to the 1990s, from genres like 19th century parlor music to 1940s Big Band to 1990s hip hop and everything in between.
As many of you are probably learning, I have a deep admiration of the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin. As such, my final essay for this class was a brief musical biography of Franklin, her accomplishments, and the influence that she had on a countless number of artists. The main concern that I had for this essay was to avoid sounding like a die hard Aretha Franklin fanboy, which is what I am. However, that sort of attitude generally is not professional. As such, I decided to stick to the objective facts, focusing on the albums and singles that truly excelled. as well as the many events that Franklin was asked to perform at. This particular style of writing gave me one of my first opportunities to consider music journalism as a professional opportunity for myself in the future. Music journalism combines my love of music with my steadily growing writing ability in a semi-formal and academic format. |
