Who is Michael Havens?
1. A Scholar of Music
My primary major is music with an emphasis in music history, musicology, and ethnomusicology. I am learning how to analyze different pieces of music in the context of the time period and culture which they were written in.
2. Un amante del idioma español (A Lover of the Spanish Language)
My second major is Spanish. My trip to Nicaragua and my visits with Spanish-speaking people within the United States have influenced my world view and have bettered me as a person. I hope to develop a mastery of the Spanish language to study classical and folk music in Southern and Central America.
3. An Advocate for Mental Health Awareness
I have struggled a lot with a general eating disorder and anxiety, especially during my time at Drury. I know what it's like to feel all alone and making sure people know that it is okay to talk about their mental health issues is a critical part of my life.
4. An Advocate for LGBTQ+ Rights
As an openly gay man, I am very vocal about my support for LGBTQ+ rights, including those on the aromantic and asexual spectrum, and especially those who don't identify within the gender binary. With LGBTQ+ rights being threatened as often as they are, I find that I feel increasingly responsible to speak out and do my part to ensure we are treated as human beings.
