My Honors 101 class (also known as CORE 101) was an introduction to collegiate writing, discussion, and reading through books and discussions regarding groups and minorities traditionally demonized by the mainstream, hence the theme of monstrosity.
The first essay provided describes the idea of monstrosity in the United States. While I was familiar with the many different forms of discrimination as a result of the dehumanization of minority groups, this particular assignment forced me to dig deeper. I was able to investigate and research some of the reasons that people demonize minority groups, specifically focusing on bible passages taken out of context to harm the LGBTQ+ community and the utilization of humor as a form of mocking those with disabilities. Within the context of the class, this particular essay served as the introduction to a great number of the goals that our professor set out for the semester, such as how the discourse and rhetoric of monstrosity has been used to ensure clear identitarian boundaries. Throughout Honors 101, I learned a great deal about how easy it is to fall into the trap of demonizing other human beings. Additionally, I better developed my researching and writing skills utilizing Drury's numerous databases and resources. |
