Drury Allies is the LGBTQ+ Support organization on Drury's campus. When I heard about the organization during Orientation Week, I knew immediately that I wanted to be as involved as I could with the organization.
For the first few months of my Freshman Year, I attended nearly every meeting, becoming a staple of the Wednesday night meetings. I also proved myself to be passionate against discrimination even within the LGBTQ+ community. As such, when the Secretary at the time unfortunately had to resign, the Executive Council of Allies reached out to myself and a few others to see if we would be interested in running for the position. I was fortunate enough to win the election for Secretary, and I went straight to work. My primary job consisted of sending out the weekly notes of our meetings, as well as serving as the liaison between the Drury student body and the Allies' Executive Council (Drury Drag Show, National Coming Out Day, Executive Council Elections, etc.). One of the highlights of my first year with Drury Allies came in February of 2019 with MBGLTACC, the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Asexual College Conference. While there, I learned a lot about ableism within activism, as well as the importance of data collection, and what it's like being an LGBTQ+ parent. The lessons I learned, and the experiences I made there changed my world view for the better. I am constantly learning, and I am so excited to continue growing with the organization. |
